Victoria Burge

New Works on Paper

February 23 - March 31, 2012
Thurs., Feb 23 from 6pm to 8pm

Victoria Burge’s prints and drawings offer “mystical geographies … a world of tonal harmonies, yellowed papers, and of blacks and whites that modulate to pewters and charcoal grays.” (Mona Molarsky, ArtNews). Building from these earlier topographies Burge continues to be inspired by and to use antique maps, charts and diagrams as the surface she draws on. In this new series the drawings have evolved into a world of mysterious geometric symbols whose assemblies and symmetries resemble an alchemist’s recipe or a page from an ancient astronomer’s journal. Burge creates new visual systems that convey her explorations into memory, absence and the multiple dimensions and implications of space, both human and scientific.

Also included in the exhibition are white on white pieces that are derived from the artist’s study of reflections on water and created from vector drawings that are laser cut in Plexiglas. The final embossed prints ambiguously reference the simultaneous subtraction and illumination of light on the surface of puddles, pools and oceans.  Burge explains that her intent is to “visually catalogue the idea of the space between spaces.”

Victoria Burge’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including The International Print Center (NY), The Center For Book Arts (NY), Kentler International Drawing Space (NY), The Hunterdon Art Museum (NJ), Redmond Bennett Gallery, NH and Gallery Hasta, India. Her work can be found in corporate, private, and public collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and Hilton Worldwide.
